Was Billy Graham a Freemason? The Facts

The evangelist Billy Graham (1918–2018) preached to more people in person than almost anyone in history. For decades, rumors have claimed he was secretly a Freemason, sometimes even a "33rd degree" Mason. The facts point the other way: Graham was not a Freemason.

What the Record Shows

Graham denied being a Mason, and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has also stated that he was never a member. His name does not appear in any Grand Lodge record, lodge roster, or Masonic publication. Where the Rumor Comes From

The claim usually rests on photos said to show a Masonic hand sign, or on the fact that some people who worked with Graham or shared a stage with him were Masons. Neither is evidence. Millions of Americans in Graham's era belonged to lodges, so it would be surprising if none of his colleagues had.
