How We Research and Fact-Check
Our articles are written and reviewed by the Explore Freemasonry Editorial Team. Before a claim goes on the site, we look for it in sources that can be checked: Grand Lodge websites and publications, official statements from appendant bodies, lodge records, and established reference works on Masonic history.
Claims about famous people get extra care. We only call someone a Freemason when there is a lodge record, a Grand Lodge statement, or the person's own public confirmation. When a claim is disputed or has been denied, we say so plainly rather than repeat a rumor. Where an article relies on specific sources, we list them in a Sources box at the end of the page.
We never publish ritual, passwords, grips, or other material Freemasons are obligated to keep private. Everything on this site comes from publicly available information.
Corrections Policy
Masonic history is full of competing claims, and fees, membership numbers, and lodge details change over time. If you spot an error or something out of date, please contact us and include a source if you have one. We review every correction request. When we make a substantive change to an article, we update the “Updated” date shown on the page.
